FDA supports “Female Viagra,” Addyi

We all know and often cringe at Viagra and Cialis commercials… will there soon be commercials like these targeting women?

In an 18-6 vote, an advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expressed its support for a female viagra, which (as the name suggests) would help combat female sexual dysfunction and increase sex drive. This drug is the first of its kind.

Women (and men) everywhere are rejoicing over the development, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about this drug.

“Flibanserin, which will be marketed under the name Addyi, works directly on the chemicals of the brain, increasing dopamine and norepinephrine. Flibanserin does have significant side effects. Some doctors are concerned about the risk of dizziness, low pressure and even blackouts, especially when combined with alcohol and for women taking birth control pills.”

Even though there is still much to be done before Addyi is available to the public, women from the trials hailed the drug for its considerable benefits.

“I am one of the lucky 11,000 women that was a patient on the flibanserin clinical trial,” said Amanda Parrish, who said she lost desire for sex with her husband, and their marriage had suffered. “What a relationship-saving eight months that was. As if the light switch had been turned on, so was I.”
